Starting out with primitive replacement limbs for injured veterans, Synapse’s vision of enhanced human performance was a pipe dream. Back in the 2020s, “cybernetic” limbs were little more than sticks attached to the severed limb, with perhaps some synthetic tendons simulating some sort of actuation. It wasn’t until drastic advances made in the field of Brain Computer Interfaces (BCIs) that replacement limbs could comprehensively capture electrical signals from the brain. That small feature suddenly enabled a plethora of new functions. Primitive limbs turned into near-realistic arms and legs, with better-than-original strength, speed, dexterity and flexibility. Moreover, limb characteristics could be tuned to the preference of the bearer.
The combat minded individuals of Fragrance (FAR PD, FAR M, Private military contractors, etc) quickly realized that fully-customizable limbs could be a great asset. They tried to embed every weapon under the sun into cybernetic limb replacements. Only some weapons remain safe and reliable, such as hydraulic implements, forearm blades, and raptor legs.
Synapse didn’t just stop there. Defensive capabilities were also of interest to them, so they developed best-in-class sub-dermal ballistic protection, as well as various magic resistances (thanks to their dubiously funded arcane research and development team).
