Why Fragrance exists

Motivation

What does the world mean to you? Why build it?

I observed divides within the world of fiction. If I wanted futuristic fiction, I had certain options. If I was in the mood for magic, I had other distinct options. There are a variety of other classifications that further divides fiction, such as geographical setting (desert? mountainside?), infrastructure (urban vs rural), technology (advanced vs primitive), etc.

The worlds of Dungeons and Dragons comes close to bridging the aforementioned genre divides. A major limitation of the prewritten Dungeons and Dragons settings is that none of them come close to evoking the science-fiction feel, which is a huge chunk of popular fiction today. (Maybe the Eberron setting, but that is still more closely tied to the historical high-fiction flavor.)

Blade Runner, The Matrix, Back to the Future, Star Wars, Edge of Tomorrow, Inception. The feeling that these movies (and series) evoke is something Fragrance aims to capture.

Goals

What are you hoping to get out of the world?

The world is meant to be a comprehensive foundation for storytelling. This means that people can take the Fragrance world setting and plug their own stories in. A tabletop RPG campaign (such as DnD) could easily be set in this universe. There should also be enough material for comics, novels, animations and illustrations to sprout from the world.

(JJ) Since I’m a GM, I want to run some DnD sessions in the Fragrance setting. I also draw in my free time, so this world will be an endless source of illustration subjects.

Hook

What makes this world unique? What makes it exciting?

Fragrance is a versatile universe. It is a superset of fictional genres, cherry-picking the best aspects of each of them. Looking for high-fantasy spell-slinging action? Tech-riddled cyberpunk dystopia thriller? Grounded, real-world mystery? Corporate or political espionage? Fragrance contains all of the above and more. Low-tech to high-tech, mundane to arcane, squalid to opulent, secluded to bustling, rural to urban, the Fragrance universe has it covered.

(Note: perhaps the only genre excluded from this setting is historical fiction. However, Fragrance does have its own history that can be examined and used, though historical states of Fragrance are not as well documented.)
